Indian Post's new address system: Write the location on Mappls app, enter DIGIPIN, and your digital address is ready
The problem of delivery delays and incorrect location will end now as Map My India has integrated DIGIPIN with its app, however, users will have to generate a 10-digit code for the location
Map My India has integrated India Post’s DIGIPIN with its Mappls app. With this new feature, now any individual or business can generate a unique 10-digit alphanumeric code for their home, shop, or any location.
The aim is to create a universal digital address for every citizen and business. This feature is now live on the Mappls app, and all users, as well as developers, can use it in their platforms and services.
The Mappls app is completely built on India’s own NavIC satellite navigation system. That is, it is a digital geospatial stack that is completely indigenous from satellite to mobile.
DIGIPIN is an innovative digital address system
DIGIPIN, meaning Digital Postal Index Number, is an innovative digital address system of India Post. This 10-digit code pinpoints any location with extreme precision. Compared to the old 6-digit PIN code, DIGIPIN provides location information up to a small grid of 4 meters x 4 meters.
MapmyIndia has integrated it into its Mappls app and added an additional layer called Mappls Pin on top of it. This Mappls Pin provides additional information like building name, floor number and nearby landmarks.
This dual system has made it easy to find accurate locations even in areas that were not previously on the map, such as rural areas or unplanned settlements. This is extremely beneficial for delivery workers, emergency services and other stakeholders.
Rakesh Verma, co-founder and CMD of MapmyIndia, called it a “historic step”. He said, "This integration will give over a billion Indians a digital postal address for their homes and businesses. It works for every user, whether they use GPS or not."
How does DIGIPIN work?
Precise location: DIGIPIN assigns a unique 10-digit code to every 4x4 meter area. This code is based on latitude and longitude.
Features of Maples PIN: It links details like building name, floor number and landmarks to DIGIPIN. If Maples PIN is not available in a rural area, the app generates a PIN by referencing the nearest landmark.
Ease for users: Any user can easily generate a DIGIPIN on the Maples app. Just enter the location or enter the PIN, and your digital address is ready.
Interoperable system: DIGIPIN is open-source and can be integrated into any app or platform. Its technical documentation is available on GitHub.
Which sectors will benefit?
Logistics and e-commerce: Delivery delays and misplacement will end. Last-mile delivery will become easier on platforms like Amazon and Flipkart.
Emergency services: Police, fire brigade, or ambulances will now be able to reach a specific location faster.
Public services: Aadhaar update, health check-ups, or banking services will be easily accessible in rural areas.
Smart cities and urban planning: An Accurate address system will simplify property tax collection, zoning, and infrastructure mapping.
Fintech and utilities: Bill payments, loan disbursements, or utility services that require precise location will be completed through DIGIPIN.
How to use it?
Download the Mappls app, enter your location or place a pin on the map. Your DIGIPIN will be generated instantly. You can share it with delivery, service providers or friends. If you're in a rural area, Mappls will make your location more accurate with nearby landmarks.
