IRDAI tells insurers: Providing digital insurance policies to consumers through Digilocker will speed up claim processing

The Insurance Regulatory Authority of India (IRDAI) has asked insurance companies to issue digital insurance policies through Digilocker. For this, IRDAI has issued a circular to all insurance companies.

This step was taken to increase the use of Digilocker in the insurance sector

"This step has been taken to increase the use of Digilocker in the insurance sector," a circular issued by IRDAI said. It also asked all companies to develop an IT system that supports Digilocker. According to IRDAI, the move will help policyholders keep all their policy-related documents safe in Digilocker.

Companies must provide information on how to use Digilocker

The circular states that all insurance companies should inform their retail policyholders about Digilocker and its use. According to the circular, technical and logistical support will be provided to tech companies under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

Claim processing will accelerate

According to the circular, the use of Digilocker in the insurance sector will reduce costs and eliminate the problem of non-delivery of policy copies. In addition, there will be a boom in claim processing and settlement. Disputes and fraud will be reduced and communication with consumers will be improved.

The authentic document is found on Digilocker

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has launched the Digilocker app under the Digital India program. On this app, consumers get authentic documents or certificates in digital format. This document is released from the respective company. Digilocker was launched with the aim of reducing the use of physical documents.

Minister of State Sanjay Dhotre insisted

Electronics and Information Technology Minister Sanjay Dhotre has written a letter to state finance minister Anurag Thakur to announce the digital policy through Digilocker. It is advised that a circular be issued from IRDA for a digital insurance policy. At the same time, it has been advised to consider all the documents released by Digilocker as valid documents. IRDAI has since issued this circular.

What is Digilocker?

Digilocker is a kind of digital vault. The government has developed it to keep important documents digitally safe. Currently, the app can store documents or certificates related to 22 services of the central government and 36 services of the state government. Apart from this health, banking and insurance-related services can also be taken through it.
